Research Resources

The links below connect to useful on-line or computer-accessible resources which members of our department have found helpful. These are offered as starting points only; their inclusion here does not imply any endorsement beyond usefulness for research and information-gathering.

Some of these resources are available only from the University of Indianapolis campus; these are indicated in [brackets] below.

One of the first web sites put up by the US government (or, indeed, by anybody of note), this is still one of the best.

Includes fairly broad, though shallow, information on every independent country, including information on geography, government, economy, and people. Also contains a useful collection of reference maps.

News Organization Web Sites

CNN Online

CNN's web presence, offers good up-to-date news on (very) recent events. Frequently updated, but little in the way of archives or in-depth information.

New York Times on the Web

The United States' premier newspaper. Archives of stories are available back to 1996, but you have to pay for full text access. Of course, you can search the index and microfiche holdings of the Times in the Krannert Memorial Library, free of charge and will full text access going back to the 1850's.

Washington Post Online

The United States' other premier newspaper. It's an excellent source of information on the federal government, but doesn't cover foreign affairs as well as the Times. Archives for the previous two weeks are always free; you can search the archives going back to 1977, but the Post will charge you to download the full text of any articles you find.
